‘Floating and Stilted Villages of the Tonle Sap’
This adventure offers a fascinating insight into the lives of the people living on the shores of South East Asia’s biggest lake. We also travel through some stunning rural scenery as we discover Kingdoms that predate Angkor on our way to the stilted village.
Description: This tour offers the wonderful and unique experience of visiting the stilted villages on the Tonle Sap Lake. We travel on red dirt roads through some of Siem Reap’s most scenic countryside. We pass through what was once the ancient Kingdom of Hariharalaya before travelling by boat through a village where the homes of the residents’ tower above us on ten-meter-high stilts that protect from the rising water. The people are fishermen, their children paddle to school by boat, pigs live in floating bamboo pens, and everything takes place on the water (and dry land in the dry season). We stop to visit a local family and enjoy a home-cooked lunch. Leaving this fantasy land behind as we jump back on our Vespas for the last part of the ride. We make our last stop at a rarely seen pre-Angkorian temple hidden away in the forest. This is an epic journey full of contrasting experiences and fantastic memories!
Stops include: Phum O village, Local market, Kompong Phluk Village, Boat Trip, Tonle Sap Lake, Lunch in Stilted Family House, hidden ancient temple, Working Pagoda.
*Note: The village itself is equally impressive in wet and dry seasons. In the wet season the water is higher and clearer, this time we travel mostly but the boat. In the dry season, the water levels are lower and muddier but we are able to travel by boat and walk around the village.
