Laos isn’t a huge country, but getting around it can take time – especially if you veer away from the usual tourist trail. The classic route, “Between Two Capitals”, is deservedly popular with visitors wanting a quick introduction to Laos, with a good mix of cities and natural beauty, plus plenty of tourist comforts along the way. The other two itineraries suggested here require more time, but reward handsomely with sleepy temples, plunging waterfalls, hill-tribe treks and mysterious ruins.
Laos has a rich history stretching back 10,000 years. At its height, it ruled over present day Laos and much of neighbouring northern Thailand. Landlocked and laid-back, it’s a unique spin on the Southeast Asia experience.
Vientiane is a city steeped in legend and history. The city is the home of the massive gilded stupa, Pha That Luang, a national symbol of Laos.
Luang Prabang is an outstanding example of the fusion of traditional architecture and Lao urban structures with those built by the European colonial authorities in the 19th and 20th centuries. It is unique and rich in history and natural beauty, a trek, mountain bike ride or some gentle kayaking gives you the chance to really discover the landscape and warm friendly people that live in and around this celebrated UNESCO world heritage site.
Lose yourself in the timelessness of Luang Prabang. Stroll narrow lanes that wind between beautifully-restored Buddhist temples, traditional timber homes, and French colonial structures. Like its iconic rivers, Luang Prabang is filled with life, dynamic and timeless.
